Why English Matters

I just finished reading Frank Herbert and Bill Ransom’s book The Jesus Incident in its Romanian edition. While I was reading it, I kept trying to see what exactly the ship was asking humans to do.

Of course, the ship (or the Ship?) wanted humans to learn how to survive on their own, how to live up to their limits and powers, and, ultimately, to exercise conscience, sensations and every other trait on their own. This had to happen on Pandorra (also proven by Panille’s answer to a question posed by the Ship: ’If I was to release all evil from this box, where would you hide?’ ).

What didn’t get into the Romanian edition was the significance given to the words by their shape and aspect, beyond meaning. The Romanian word for ”Worship” is ”Adorare”. However, there is no equally significant Romanian equivalent for ”WorShip”.
